Tellico Plains is a town of about 900 people sitting where the foothills meet the Cherokee National Forest. It is the Tennessee gateway to the Cherohala Skyway, and it might be the best small-town base camp in East Tennessee for anyone who loves waterfalls, mountain drives, and trout streams.
I'm David Millard with Real Estate Concepts. Here's what to do when you come through.
This is the headliner. Bald River Falls is a 90-foot waterfall in the Cherokee National Forest, visible right from the road off Tellico River Road (Forest Road 210), about six miles from town. You can literally drive up, park, and walk onto the bridge for the view.
The Bald River Falls Bridge reopened in May 2025 after a years-long complete rebuild. The new bridge has an observation deck, railings, benches, and a design that separates pedestrians from traffic. It is built for visitors now, not just cars passing through.
Go on a weekday if you can. Parking is limited, and weekends get crowded. There are no restrooms at the falls, so plan ahead. The Bald River Trail leaves from the far end of the parking lot and climbs into the Bald River Gorge Wilderness, about 4.5 miles of old railroad grade along the river.
The Cherohala Skyway starts right here in Tellico Plains and runs 51 miles over the mountains into North Carolina. It is a National Scenic Byway, and it earns the title. Overlooks, high-elevation balds, and some of the best fall color driving in the Southeast.
Give it a full morning or afternoon. Fuel up in town first. Cell service drops out in stretches, so download your map before you leave.
The Tellico River is stocked trout water, and it draws anglers from all over the region. Check current fishing regulations before you cast. Along the river you will find swimming holes and small cascades, including Baby Falls, a short drive upstream from Bald River Falls.
Tellico Plains is surrounded by it. Beyond Bald River Falls, the forest around town offers trailheads, dispersed camping, and backcountry hiking. The Tellico Ranger District office sits just outside town on Highway 165 and can point you to current trail conditions.
Small, walkable, and built for visitors heading to the mountains. Local shops, cafes, and the Cherohala Skyway visitor center. It is the kind of downtown where you grab breakfast before the Skyway and dinner after the falls.
Parking: Bald River Falls parking is limited and fills up on weekends. Arrive early or go on a weekday.
Best Times to Visit: Fall is peak season for the Skyway and the falls. Spring brings high water and big flows. Summer is best for swimming holes.
Come Prepared: No restrooms at Bald River Falls. No water on site. Spotty cell service on the Skyway and Tellico River Road.
Yes. The Bald River Falls Bridge reopened in May 2025 after a complete rebuild, with a new observation deck and pedestrian-safe design. The falls are visible right from the road.
About six miles. Take Highway 165 east out of town, then turn onto Tellico River Road (Forest Road 210) past the ranger station. The falls are on the right.
A 51-mile National Scenic Byway connecting Tellico Plains, Tennessee to Robbinsville, North Carolina. It climbs over the Unicoi Mountains with overlooks and high-elevation views.
People do wade and swim below the falls, but the water is cold and the rocks are slick. Watch your footing, and keep kids close.
If you want small-town mountain living with the national forest as your backyard, yes. It is quiet, affordable, and about 45 minutes from the Tellico Village and Lenoir City amenities. Check out the Tellico Village area guide for the lake-community side of the region.
