Jefferson City started life as Mossy Creek, settled in 1788, and grew up around Carson-Newman University, founded in 1851. It is a college town with a Victorian mansion, a creek driving a downtown revival, and two lakes within easy reach. About 30 miles northeast of Knoxville on US-11E, it works as a day trip or a home base.
Carson-Newman is a private Baptist university of about 2,700 students, and it sets the town's rhythm. The Eagles compete in NCAA Division II, and games, concerts, and campus events are open to the community through much of the year. The campus sits on the south side of town. Check the university calendar before a visit. On a game weekend, the town feels twice its size.
Glenmore Mansion at 1280 N Chucky Pike is the standout historic stop. Built in 1868-69 for railroad president John Roper Branner, it is a Second Empire Victorian with 27 rooms and mid-Victorian furnishings, run as a house museum. Guided tours run Saturdays and Sundays from 1:00 to 4:00, May through October, and cost $10. The candlelight Christmas tours in December are the local tradition. Call or check the website before going, since hours are seasonal.
The town's original name comes from the creek, and Mossy Creek is the center of Jefferson City's comeback. The Mossy Creek Foundation launched Creek Fest in May 2026, a two-day event with a 5K, duck race, live music, vendors, and a beer garden. The Mossy Creek Wildlife Viewing Area has a short trail for birdwatching, and Mossy Creek Station Park gives you a green stop downtown. This is where the town is investing its energy.
Just outside town, Cherokee Dam holds back Cherokee Lake on the Holston River. The Cherokee Dam Loop Trail runs about 2 miles around the dam grounds and is the area's most-walked trail. The TVA grounds are well kept and make a good picnic stop. Cherokee Lake itself, about 6 miles out, is the boating and fishing water, with swimming coves in summer. Go on a weekday morning for the quiet version.
Broadway Boulevard is the dining strip. Gondolier Italian Restaurant at 544 E Broadway is the longtime local favorite for Italian. Sazon Mexican Restaurant at 221 E Broadway covers the Mexican craving. Lisa's Country Kitchen at 1712 N Highway 92 does country cooking. The Hoagie Shop at 303 E Broadway handles sandwiches, and 60 Beans Coffee at 120 E Broadway is the coffee stop. Nothing fancy, all local.
At 2004 Branner Ave, Mossy Creek Outfitters is the town's outdoor shop: fishing gear, apparel, kayak, paddleboard, and tube rentals, plus guided fishing trips on local waters. If you want to get on the creek or the lake without owning the gear, start here. They also run classes and community paddle events.
Glenmore Mansion tours run weekends May through October only, with Christmas tours in December. Verify hours on their website before driving over. Parking downtown is easy and free. Cherokee Lake is at full pool May through September. Jefferson City sits on US-11E between Knoxville and Morristown, about 30 miles northeast of Knoxville, with I-40 access nearby.
The town grew up around the creek, named for the moss in its bed. Settlers arrived in 1788, and the town kept the Mossy Creek name until it incorporated as Jefferson City in 1901.
The campus is welcoming, and athletic events, concerts, and many activities are open to the public. Check the university calendar for what is on during your visit.

Cherokee Lake is about 6 miles out and is the main boating and fishing lake. Douglas Lake is south near Dandridge. Both are easy day trips.
A two-day festival the Mossy Creek Foundation launched in May 2026 to celebrate the creek and downtown's revival: 5K, duck race, live music, vendors, and a beer garden.
Pair this with Things to Do in Dandridge, TN, about 15 minutes south: Tennessee's second-oldest town, the historic downtown on Douglas Lake, and the Tinsley-Bible soda fountain.
