If you're relocating to Oak Ridge for Y-12, ORNL, or one of the new builds, schools are probably your first question. Here's the straight answer.
I'm David Millard with Real Estate Concepts. I help relocating families find the right house in the right school zone every month.
Oak Ridge Schools is its own independent school district, separate from Anderson County Schools. That's a big deal. It means the district answers to Oak Ridge, not the county, and it's one of the reasons the schools perform the way they do.
The district office is at 304 New York Ave, Oak Ridge, TN 37830. Phone: (865) 425-9001. Website: ortn.edu.
The district consistently ranks among the top in Tennessee for academic performance, with particular strength in STEM. That tracks, given the town it's in.
Oak Ridge has four elementary schools, all serving kindergarten through 4th grade:
Elementary zones are neighborhood-based. Your address determines your school. I'll verify zoning for any house you're considering.
Two middle schools serve grades 5 through 8:
One high school serves the whole city: Oak Ridge High School on the Turnpike. It ranks among the top 50 high schools in Tennessee, with strong AP offerings, STEM programs tied to the labs, and competitive athletics.
The STEM pipeline here is real. Kids grow up around scientists and engineers. The high school's science programs benefit directly from the town's identity.
Zones matter. Elementary and middle school assignments follow attendance zones. Don't assume. A house two streets over can zone differently.
Ratings change. School ratings shift year to year. I can pull current data, but always verify with the district before you buy.
Timing. If you're relocating mid-year, the district handles transfers routinely. Y-12 and ORNL families do it constantly. The schools are used to it.
Private options. A few private and parochial schools operate in and around Oak Ridge, but most relocating families use the public system. It's that good.
Yes. Oak Ridge Schools is one of Tennessee's top-performing districts, especially in STEM. The high school ranks among the state's top 50, and several elementary and middle schools earn top marks.
Eight: four elementary schools (Glenwood, Linden, Willow Brook, Woodland), two middle schools (Jefferson, Robertsville), one high school (Oak Ridge High), plus a preschool program.
Generally, yes. Attendance is based on residency within the district. Out-of-district enrollment is limited. If schools are your priority, buy inside the district lines.
Glenwood Elementary consistently posts the district's strongest elementary numbers. That said, all four elementaries perform well above state averages. Zone and commute matter as much as rankings.
Call the district at (865) 425-9001 or check ortn.edu. Or ask me. I verify zoning for every buyer before we write an offer.
