Crossville calls itself the Golf Capital of Tennessee, and it's not bragging.

The plateau city is packed with golf courses — more per capita than just about anywhere in the state — and the Fairfield Glade resort community alone has multiple championship courses wrapped around lakes and amenities. If golf is your game, there is no better home base in Tennessee. Full stop.

But Crossville is more than fairways. It's a working small city sitting right on I-40, serving as the commercial and medical hub for the whole plateau region. The downtown has historic character and a growing local scene. Shopping, restaurants, and services cover daily life without a trip down the mountain. For a small city, it's remarkably self-sufficient.

Fairfield Glade deserves its own look because so many buyers start there. It's one of Tennessee's best-known planned communities — golf courses, lakes, marinas, tennis, trails, and thousands of homes from condos and villas to lakefront properties. A lot of it is geared toward easy, low-maintenance living, which is why it draws so many relocators. If you want recreation built into your neighborhood, tour the Glade before you decide anything.

Outside the city and the Glade, Crossville's surroundings are classic plateau country — rolling land, wide views, and rural properties with acreage. The plateau elevation means slightly cooler temperatures and a landscape that feels open in a way the valley doesn't.

Homes in Crossville proper span the range: historic houses near downtown, mid-century ranch neighborhoods, newer subdivisions, and rural properties on the outskirts. Fairfield Glade is its own market — condos, townhomes, and single-family homes, many with golf-course or lake frontage. Prices across the board reflect the small-city setting, which is part of why the relocators keep coming.

The plateau setting brings a few practical notes. Winters are a notch colder and snowier up here than in the valley — not severe, but enough that heating costs and driveway grades deserve a thought. I-40 is your lifeline: Knoxville and Nashville are both reachable, and plenty of residents make the drive regularly. But Crossville is a place you live, not a place you commute from — the local economy and the lifestyle are the point.

Local flavor is golf-town Tennessee with deep plateau roots. The courses host events year-round. Downtown has its festivals and its characters. The surrounding natural areas — state parks, overlooks, the Catoosa wildlands — give you world-class outdoor recreation without the crowds. There's a large transplant community here, people who moved from all over the country and chose Crossville deliberately. Ask them why and you'll get an earful — happily.

Crossville suits buyers who want small-city completeness with a golfer's paradise attached — or who just want plateau living at a sane price. Either way, it's worth a visit.
