Tellico Plains Weekend Guide: Waterfalls and the Skyway

Tellico Plains sits where the mountains start. A 90-foot roadside waterfall, a 51-mile scenic byway over the mountains, and trout streams in every direction. This is a waterfall-and-winding-road weekend.

Day One: Falls and the River

Morning: Bald River Falls off Tellico River Road (Forest Road 210), about six miles from town. Ninety feet of waterfall visible right from the road. The bridge was completely rebuilt and reopened in May 2025 with a proper observation deck, railings, and benches. Go on a weekday morning. Parking is limited and there are no restrooms on site.

Afternoon: The Tellico River for stocked trout fishing and swimming holes. Baby Falls is nearby for a second waterfall stop. The Bald River Trail climbs about 4.5 miles into the Bald River Gorge Wilderness for those who want more.

Evening: Dinner in downtown Tellico Plains, then an early night. Tomorrow is a driving day.

Day Two: The Skyway

Morning: The Cherohala Skyway. Fifty-one miles of National Scenic Byway climbing from Tellico Plains over the mountains into North Carolina. Overlooks the whole way, fall color that rivals anywhere in the East. Fill the tank and bring a jacket. It gets cold up top.

Afternoon: Back in town, explore the shops and the Cherohala Skyway visitor center. The Tellico Ranger District office on Highway 165 has maps and current trail conditions for the Cherokee National Forest.

Where to Stay

Tellico Plains has motels, cabins, and campgrounds. The Cherohala Skyway corridor has cabin rentals with mountain views. Book ahead for October weekends.

Good to Know

Parking: Bald River Falls parking is small. Weekdays are fine, weekends fill by late morning.

Roads: Tellico River Road is narrow and winding. Take it slow, especially with a trailer.
