Sevierville Weekend Guide: Beyond the Parkway
Everyone knows the Parkway. This weekend is the other Sevierville: the historic downtown, the locals' food scene, and the back roads the tourists miss. Built for people who want the Smokies without the bumper-to-bumper.
Day One: Historic Downtown
Morning: Start at the Dolly Parton statue in front of the Sevier County Courthouse. It has been there for decades and it is the meeting point for everything downtown. Walk Bruce Street and the historic district.
Afternoon: The Appalachian at 133 Bruce Street for lunch. Farm-to-table, menu printed daily, chef from Blackberry Farm. This is the best meal in Sevier County most days.
Evening: The Pines Downtown on Court Avenue. Pub food plus duckpin bowling. Or Red's Soda Fountain on Court Avenue for the 1940s throwback. Then live music wherever you find it downtown.
Day Two: The Back Roads
Morning: Breakfast at Applewood Farmhouse Restaurant on Apple Valley Road. Southern cooking in the Apple Barn complex. Get there early on weekends.
Afternoon: Drive the back roads toward the park. Wears Valley is the quiet entrance to the Smokies, no Parkway required. Or head to Bush's Visitor Center in nearby Chestnut Hill for the free museum and cafe.
Evening: Seasons 101 downtown for the upscale dinner, or Graze Burgers for the casual locals' pick.
Where to Stay
Downtown Sevierville has a growing set of boutique stays and rentals. The Parkway corridor has every chain hotel and cabin rental company in the Smokies. Stay downtown for this itinerary, Parkway for the full tourist version.
Good to Know
Parking: Downtown street parking is free and easy. The Parkway corridor is its own traffic universe. Avoid it on summer and fall weekends if you can.
Timing: The Appalachian needs a reservation. Downtown is quietest on weekday mornings and liveliest on Friday and Saturday nights.
