Dandridge Weekend Guide: History on the Lake

By Real Estate Concepts

Dandridge is Tennessee's second-oldest town, sitting right on Douglas Lake with a downtown the TVA tried to flood in 1942 and the locals refused to lose. A weekend here is simple: walk the history on day one, get on the water on day two.

Day One: Downtown and the Dike

Morning: walk the historic district. Park once and cover Main, Gay, and Meeting Streets. See the 1845 Greek Revival courthouse, the four original taverns (Roper, Hickman, Shepherd's, Thomas), and the Hickman Tavern, built around 1820 and now Town Hall. The whole district is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Midday: lunch at Tinsley-Bible. The soda fountain at 1224 Gay St has run since 1911. Get the Bible Burger and a hand-dipped shake at the counter. Remember it is only open Monday through Friday, 8:00 to 5:30, so this is a Friday-arrival lunch or a weekday trip.

Afternoon: walk the dike. The stone saddle dam the TVA built in 1942 rises just behind Town Hall and runs parallel to Main Street. Walk it for lake views and the story of how residents petitioned Eleanor Roosevelt to save the town. Then swing by the Shepard Inn at 136 E Main St, standing since about 1820.

Evening: dinner at Angelo's at the Point. Drive to 122 Boat Dock Dr for a lakeside table at sunset. Steaks, seafood, live music on the patio. It is the signature dinner in town.

Day Two: Douglas Lake

Morning: Dandridge Boat Dock. Launch at the public ramp at 157 Public Dr, or just bring a picnic to the platform and watch the lake wake up. Rent kayaks or paddleboards if you did not bring a boat.

Midday: Douglas Dam. Drive west on Highway 139 into Sevier County to see the dam that made the lake. There is a boat ramp, riverside camping, and a picnic shelter. The structure itself is worth the stop.

Afternoon: Field of Dreams. If you have kids or just want to move, the Field of Dreams Activity Center has an indoor court, a walking track, and six ball fields.

Evening: head home via the lake road. Take Highway 92 south along the water for the long way out. The bridges over Douglas Lake at golden hour are the free souvenir.
