Sunbright Weekend Guide: A Slow Weekend Done Right

Sunbright is a small plateau town with a big secret: it sits within 15 minutes of Frozen Head State Park, Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary, and the Big South Fork. This weekend is for slow mornings and big days. Set up in Sunbright and radiate out.

Day One: The Big House and the Big Woods

Morning: Breakfast in town, then drive the short hop to Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary in Petros. The prison opened in 1896 and closed in 2009. Tours walk you through the cellblocks and the history. Check their site for tour times and concert dates.

Afternoon: Lunch at the Warden's Table, the restaurant on the prison grounds. Then head to Frozen Head State Park, about ten minutes away, for an afternoon hike. Note that the park is mid-renovation, so confirm what is open before you go.

Evening: Back in Sunbright. Small-town evening. Porch, fireflies, done.

Day Two: Big South Fork

Morning: Drive to the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area. The Twin Arches area, a short drive from Sunbright, holds giant natural sandstone arches worth the walk. Short loop trails, big payoff.

Afternoon: Picnic at the arches or drive the scenic gorge roads. If you want more, the Obed Wild and Scenic River is an easy add-on on the way back.

Evening: Dinner in town or in Oneida, about 20 minutes north, before the drive home.
