Sneedville Weekend Guide: Waterfalls and Quiet Roads
This weekend is for anyone who wants to slow down. Sneedville is the Hancock County seat, a small town in the Clinch River valley where the loudest thing on a Saturday morning might be the water. Come for the falls, stay for the quiet.
Day One: Waterfalls and the River
Morning: Start at Elrod Falls off Elrod Falls Road near Thorn Hill. It is a short, flat walk from the small parking area to a multi-tiered waterfall with swimming holes below. TripAdvisor ranks it the top thing to do in Sneedville, and it is easy to see why. Bring a swimsuit in summer, sturdy shoes year-round, and pack out everything you pack in. There is no cell service out here, so download your directions before you go.
Afternoon: Head to the Clinch River, which runs right through Hancock County. Kayak, canoe, or fish some of the cleanest water in Tennessee. Several outfitters and cabin operations along Highway 70 near Kyles Ford can set you up.
Evening: Dinner in town. Pizza Plus at 1384 Main Street does a lunch buffet, specialty pizzas, pasta, and hoagies. Small-town dining, fair prices, no pretension.
Day Two: History and a Day Trip
Morning: Visit the Mahala Mullins Cabin on Vardy Blackwater Road, the restored home of a legendary Hancock County moonshiner. Across the road sits the last remaining structure of the Vardy Community School. It is a real piece of Appalachian history, free to see from the road.
Afternoon: Take the day trip to Cumberland Gap National Historical Park, about 40 minutes away. Hike, drive the Pinnacle overlook, and stand where three states meet.
Where to Stay
Cabin rentals along the Clinch River are the move here. Book something on the water if you can. For chain hotels, Morristown is the closest full-service option, about 30 minutes south.
Good to Know
Parking: Elrod Falls has a small gravel lot that fits about half a dozen cars. Go on a weekday morning for the best shot at having it to yourself.
Come prepared: Sneedville is rural. Fill the tank, bring snacks and water, and do not count on cell service at the falls.
