Powell Weekend Guide: Small Town, Big Backyard
Powell is a small town with an outsized backyard. Great parks, quirky local spots, and some of the best trail systems in the Knoxville area minutes away. This is an outdoorsy weekend that never leaves you far from a good meal.
Day One: Parks and Local Flavor
Morning: Start at Powell Station Park, 2318 West Emory Road. Playground, skate park, sports fields, and walking paths. A solid family morning.
Afternoon: Angora Frog Farm and Dog Park at 7325 Brickyard Road is a local favorite. A half-mile gravel trail through the woods, a lookout tower slide, and a shaded dog park with agility features. Free admission. Right next door, The Landing at 7412 Brickyard Road is an event space and outdoor spot worth a look.
Evening: Dinner along Clinton Highway. Powell's strip has the classic East Tennessee mix of diners, BBQ, and family restaurants.
Day Two: Trails and Water
Morning: Drive to Haw Ridge Park in nearby Oak Ridge. Over 30 miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, and trail running along the Clinch River. One of the best trail systems in the region.
Afternoon: Norris Lake is a short drive north. Swim, boat, or just find a quiet cove. Or visit the Menifee Station historical marker at 7444 Clinton Highway for a quick dose of local history.
Where to Stay
Powell is mostly residential, so most visitors stay along the Clinton Highway corridor or in North Knoxville, both within 15 minutes. Vacation rentals in the Beaver Creek area are another good option.
Good to Know
Parking: Free at all the parks. Haw Ridge trailheads fill up on pretty weekends, so go early.
Best timing: Spring and fall are prime for the trails. Summer afternoons are for the lake.
