Knoxville Weekend Guide: Two Days in the Marble City

Knoxville is the hub everything in East Tennessee ladders up to. Two days here: downtown and the river on day one, the outdoorsy side on day two. Built for first-timers and for relocators scouting neighborhoods.

Day One: Downtown and Market Square

Morning: Start at Market Square. Coffee, the farmers market on Saturdays, and people-watching. Walk Gay Street down to the river.

Afternoon: The Sunsphere in World's Fair Park, then the Knoxville Museum of Art. Free admission, and the Thorne Rooms are worth it. Walk the riverfront greenway after.

Evening: Dinner downtown. Tupelo Honey for Southern comfort, Lonesome Dove for the upscale night, or Tomato Head in Market Square for pizza. Drinks on Gay Street after.

Morning: Ijams Nature Center. Quarries for swimming, trails for hiking, all ten minutes from downtown. This is Knoxville's best outdoor asset.

Afternoon: Zoo Knoxville if you have kids, or the Tennessee Theatre district for a matinee. Lunch at Calhoun's On The River for barbecue with a river view.

Evening: Sunset at the river, then dinner in the Old City. Emilia for Italian or The Oliver Royale for the splurge.
