Kingston Weekend Guide: History on the Water
Kingston was once the capital of Tennessee for a single day, and it has been a river town ever since. This weekend mixes real frontier history with lake time. Best for history buffs and anyone who likes their small towns with water views.
Day One: The Fort and the Waterfront
Morning: Fort Southwest Point at 1226 South Kentucky Street. A reconstructed 1797 federal frontier fort on the bluff above the Clinch River. Give it two hours, and catch the Kingston Heritage Center while you are in the area.
Afternoon: Kingston Waterfront Park downtown. Walk the shoreline where the Clinch and Tennessee Rivers meet. This is one of the prettiest downtown waterfronts in East Tennessee.
Evening: Dinner downtown. Caramella Bistro on West Race Street does the upscale night out. For the classic Kingston experience, breakfast-style dinner at Handee Burger on North Kentucky Street, home of the $1.39 slider.
Day Two: Lake Day
Morning: Watts Bar Lake is Kingston's backyard. Boat ramp access is easy, and the fishing is legit.
Afternoon: Drive the river roads. The Southwest Point Amphitheater area has green space and river views. Pack a lunch or grab barbecue at Buddy's Bar-B-Q on North Kentucky Street.
Evening: Sunset at the waterfront park, then ice cream downtown.
Where to Stay
Chain hotels along North Kentucky Street near I-40 cover the basics. Lake-area vacation rentals on Watts Bar are the upgrade if you are here for the water.
